Deep below the silicon surface, the SPRIE method produces regular structures in the micrometer range that refract light. (Photo: KIT/CFN)

Building 3D Structures from a 2D Template

By means of a new method co-developed by a group of KIT researchers headed by Professor Martin Wegener (SPRIE – Sequential Passivation and Reactive Ion Etching), a regularly microstructured photonic 3D crystal can be produced within a few minutes. This method combines tested with innovative fabrication processes, such as etching and self-organization.
